When we go shopping at the super market, do we think how do the products reach the shelves? How many people, processes are involved in bringing the goods for the consumers on the shelves? All the products which are available on the shelves for consumers are an effort of supply chain operation. It is an effort of management of flow of goods for any process to be efficient.
A look back at the production of “biscuits”, from the raw material to the finished product is a supply chain process. From the initial steps of procuring raw materials, concentration of ingredients in the recipe to inventory, logistics to make the finished product is an outcome of supply chain process. The process involves handling and management of the process by a number of personnel, all of which count for the process to be efficient.
Any product which reaches the end user is a combined effort of multiple organizations, personnel known as supply chain. The concept has existed for a long time, but was not understood by most businesses in making any process efficient. Most businesses worked on the “four walls” concept, and did not pay much attention to other activities which affected the efficiency of any process. It would be mostly disjointed efforts and hence ineffective supply chain.
How much more effective the supply chain process can be if all activities are synchronized and properly managed? Any supply chain operation if properly managed and handled can maximize value to the customer significantly, and can have an advantage over competitors. It is a conscious effort from all the firms of the supply chain to run the stages of the supply chain in the most effective and efficient way. All the stages, firms of any supply chain are linked, connected in a sequential and non-sequential manner.
For any organization supply chain is a science. The science, in which there is central control of production, shipment and distribution of a product. If managed properly, it leads to much more efficiency in any process and considerable saving of time and money for organizations. For any supply chain to be effective, the network of individual processes from procurement of material, to transformation in to intermediate and finished products, then to distribution network and finally to the customers has to be properly managed and synchronized.
