After completing his management education, he graduated to a much wider canvas in 1993 – joining CRISIL – the leading Indian rating agency – as a Credit Rating Analyst. Over the next eight years – with CRISIL (now a Standard & Poor company) and then with international rating agencies Duff & Phelps Credit Rating and FITCH Ratings – he executed over 100 rating assignments for organizations across industries and critically evaluated credit-risks of a wider portfolio of organizations as a member of the apex Rating Committee. Not only did this tenure prove invaluable in getting a feel of the cross-functional nature of any business – it also provided a classic exposure to the role of Strategy in business decisions as well as to top-management functioning, philosophy & mindset. As a member of the India start-up teams of Duff & Phelps and FITCH Ratings – he set up and led their southern and eastern India operations as Vice President - reporting to the President & Managing Director.
The next stage of this odyssey saw him graduate into a professor of business in 2001. He earned his PhD in Management during this phase and further enhanced his understanding of business excellence through class-room teaching of several classic Harvard Business School cases. Associated full-time initially with Goa Institute of Management, Goa and then with Administrative Staff College of India Hyderabad, Dr. Sengupta served IIM Indore and IIM Kozhikode as Visiting Faculty for eight academic years. He was awarded Dewang Mehta Best Teacher Award in Retail Management for the year 2009.
Since 2009, Dr. Sengupta moved on to assume successive academic leadership responsibilities – Founder-Director, Center for Healthcare Management, Administrative Staff College of India, Hyderabad; Director, School of Management, International School of Business & Media, Pune; Dean, College of Management & Economics Studies and Director, Center for Management Development, University of Petroleum & Energy Studies, Dehradun.
